THE EXPERIENCEf
SUMMARY. PROFILES.
The Finchden experience was unforgetable, unlike anything enjoyed before or since. Hard to diffinitively describe to anyone who had not visited it, it was an intuitive and creative environment that enhanced all those who were fortunate to live there.
Best described by Mr Lyward as "A place of hospitality", all who visited were made welcome, and fundimentally acknowledged of in terms of themselves, rather than in terms of set of pre-ordained conditions. The sense of relief in being so valued and readily accepted, moved many to comment that they felt they had at last found their true home.
But this was where the great creative skill of Mr Lyward also began. By affording a true acknowledged welcome, he was also affording the freedom to be responsible for one's own actions - for many the first time in their lives. This of course is a profound test - freedom needs to be learned and and managed, and it was the challenge of this freedom that commanded a creative response. Responsibilty, or the "ability to respond", was a subtle skill that boys gradually learned in a vibrant and robust peer group environment.
